3rd Cup Café & Venue – Coffee with a Cause

GBCK began an exciting adventure in November 2012 as we opened a coffee bar called 3rd Cup Café & Venue located in the Times building in Kunia (across from Walmart).  Please read through this page for more information about 3rd Cup.

Where did the idea to start a coffee bar come from?
The initial concept started with Pastor Mike while on a mission trip in 1992.  In 2008 Pastor Mike begun exploring the idea with GBCK’s leadership team.  After several years of prayer and research, the concept is becoming a reality this November.

What’s the purpose of starting a coffee bar?
The purpose of 3rd Cup Café and Venue is to create a place where the church and community can cross paths on a daily basis.  This follows GBCK’s stated value of reaching those who are far from God in our community and culture.

How will the community be reached and served?
The possibilities are only limited by our creativity.  One primary way is every penny of profit will be given toward local and global charities.  Further, the venue space can be used for live performances, art shows, and community meetings and events.  In an intangible way, the coffee house provides a place where relationships can be formed and fostered.  We will eventually hold a church service in the coffee bar.

Why coffee?
Starbucks has used coffee to create a culture of connection.  In our increasingly fragmented society, Starbucks fills the basic human need for relationship by creating a place for this to happen.  No other product can do this like coffee.

Why Kunia?
Our initial search for a location was limited to Kapolei.  However, it is expensive in Kapolei and we did not want to enter a lease we could not handle.  The Kunia location is both feasible and strategic.

What does “3rd Cup” mean?
The name is a play on the idea that the 1st cup you’re a stranger, the 2nd cup you’re a friend, and the 3rd Cup you’re family.

How is 3rd Cup structured?
3rd Cup is a Limited Liability Company (LLC) with Pastor Mike as the sole member.  3rd Cup is a for-profit business.  This means GBCK and 3rd Cup are two separate entities.  We like to say: “Missionally connected — Structurally separate.”

Why the separation?
There are several reasons:
•  We felt the best stewardship of church resources is to keep the church and the coffee bar financially separate.  This protects the church’s financial viability in the event that 3rd Cup does not perform as expected.
•  We see business as a platform for ministry that gives us a unique connection to the community.

What is Pastor Mike’s and the GBCK staff’s role in 3rd Cup?
In the start-up phase, Pastor Mike is working with our architect, general contractor, and various vendors and suppliers.  GBCKer, Mel Reyes, is doing a lot of leg work as well.  Eventually, Pastor Mike will become the #1 customer at 3rd Cup.

GBCK’s staff are primarily focused on church-specific work.

Is Pastor Mike getting paid by 3rd Cup?
No, Pastor Mike is employed by GBCK.  3rd Cup has hired a store manager to run the day-t0-day operations.

Can I volunteer at 3rd Cup?
Absolutely!  Volunteer opportunities will be made known as we get closer to the opening.  If you are on Facebook please “Like” 3rd Cup on our Facebook page.
Please note that volunteers will not be able to make and serve coffee and food because of health regulations.  This function is limited to employees.
