I’m excited about being at this Small Group Conference this week. Even though it’s disruputs the “normal” rhythym of life, it’s always fun “living on the edge”. It was an adventure to get us here in the OC, but we made it. I’m looking to find some nuggets and gems to take back to Hawaii and apply to the way we do small groups. It’s always good to see how others in the body of Christ do things to check and see and evaluate how we are in the mix of things. We’re heading out in a few moments in this wet, gray , and rainy weather to the huge campus of Saddleback. More to come….

Hey Hey Mikey, I like the intentional spiritual living. I have finally learned that you have to pick your friends. Unfortunately, I don’t know of anyone I respect as much as mom. Right now I have a friend who is recently divorced, she and I meet at the house and hang out on Mondays. I am a friend to the divorcees. Enju from Korea. Christina from Malaysia. Very strong ladies, but I pray that they’ll seek Jesus, and turn from they’re own wisdom. They are “christian”, but need to refocus. Money, investing in houses, publishing a cookbook, “my husband is dragging me down” are all reasons for divorce.
God Bless Us ALL in Our Process, even when we make mistakes.

Mike, Our Pastor preached about Faith Healing. Have faith. “O you of little faith”. Do you believe that we have faith, then God heals? Do believe that it has something to do with Gods will. There are a lot of people full of faith, and don’t get healed. Why?
M.
Comment by Mari Ferari on February 21, 2008 at 7:12 am
Or could it be that God’s timing for healing is not always our timing? Could it be that it IS God’s will to heal but that his TIMING for healing is either on this side of eternity or the next? Faith plays out in both scenarios: we know we can believe for healing while on earth (Jesus shows this) but we are also told to “fight the good fight of faith…to take hold of the eternal life which we are called.”
“Little” faith doesn’t mean size, it means length. When Jesus admonishes Peter for his little faith when he started sinking into the lake it’s because his faith was too short not lacking. We know what Jesus says about “mustard seed” faith, so size isn’t the issue.
Ultimately, there’s no neat answer to this question.

Thanks for this recap. Sweet has such a unique perspective on stuff. The EPIC acrostic was especially helpful for me as a communicator.
Comment by Pete Wilson on March 3, 2008 at 5:21 pm
You’re welcome. I just picked up Postmodern Pilgrims in which he devotes a chapter to each letter in EPIC.

Michael, thanks for the note on Leonard Sweet’s talk. I love reading/listening to Leonard Sweet!
I especially like the idea of “many drafts to becoming a disciple,” especially being on the back-end of writing a dissertation.
And, like you, I thank God for thinkers like Sweet who stretch me and make me think, too.

PM – I love your idea about doing the whole fasting prayer thing once or twice a week. Mike and I didnt do a food fast, we did something much more difficult – TV!!! A media fast. At first i missed having all the information of things that were going on in the world. In the middle of the week i realized that all that information that is being thrown at me is really just taking up god space in my mind. Sad to admit but my mind very little space to store gods word. And i mean who can hear God trying to talk to you when you have Oprah replaying in your mind!

I visited his church in 2006. Anyone who hands out ear plugs before worship and serves red wine at communion is ok in my book.
Comment by mikekenohara on March 12, 2008 at 7:12 am
Media fasts ARE tough! You caught the whole idea behind fasting: less of us (and Oprah, Burger King, etc.) and more of God. Thanks, Sonya.

sound like it was a success. I also got saved at one of those GBCP youth camps. you never know what kind of leaders will catch fire at these meetings. great job GBCK.

Lately when I’m with my non-Christian friends, I’m always asked to do the meal prayer because they know I’m a Christian and that I attend church. I love to take this opportunity to hope to reach one person. At first it was hard to do it because I wasn’t sure how my friends might think of my prayers but its become easier and I take every opportunity to share the Word even if its through a short meal prayer.
Comment by Keliinui on June 29, 2008 at 8:18 am
That’s great! If the pastor prays, well, that’s what he’s supposed to do. But when YOU pray, people take notice. It’s just another way of planting a seed in people’s hearts. Keep planting!!

I can really relate to your experience. I don’t travel that much, but when I am gone, it is for about a week at a time. And my kids always looked forward to dad coming home after a long trip with what they affectionately called “prize-ohs.” And one of our favorite places at home was the whiteboard posted low on the wall in Taylor’s bedroom!
Comment by Wayne on July 18, 2008 at 12:16 pm
yorgyb,
basically these stores are under-performing and two-years-old or less. Economy and gas prices don’t help either.

Aaron,
yep, bound to happen, but it’s not like Starbucks is going anywhere. With Shultz back at the helm changes will be made.

Prize-ohs…that’s funny. That’s a good idea putting a whiteboard in Taylor’s room. I should give the kids their own.

that’s a good one PM. i think i (we) hear god more than we want to believe. I know half of what he says i weed out because i dont think it’s really him talking to poor old me. and of course sometimes i’m too scared to hear what he has to say.
Comment by SSarmiento on July 25, 2008 at 7:55 am
yep, I know how scary it can be to hear God’s voice (can you say, “selective hearing?”) but I always thing to myself, what’s the price we pay if we don’t hear him? That’s more risky.

It’s been some years since I last saw Elliott, but there was a time when he was as much a part of my life as my own family. He was a rabid WWF (not WWE) fan and had mad Street Fighter II skills. In some ways, it’s really hard to wrap myself around a vision of Elliott without his wheels. While they certainly did not define him, the thought of him living a life without physical encumberances is tough to comprehend. I have little doubt that the Elliott I knew would gladly give me a body slam or hadoken were I able to see him now (in brotherly love, of course!). While I am left with sadness on one hand, on the other hand I have hope in the knowledge that, in Elliott, God has provided an example of how He has imbued His people with amazing capacities for love and courage.
Comment by Paul B on October 8, 2008 at 6:41 am
That’s great, Paul. Elliott’s capacity for love, perseverance, and courage could probably never be measured. And you’re right, you probably have a few body slams coming your way when you see him again…

Good Post! I also think money should be talked about because even though “money” is talked about in many churches in terms of prosperity, “money management” is hardly talked about. The fact that really our money is not our own and it belongs to God or how to become better stewards of the money God has given us. But again, good points. And preach, preacher! lol

Pastor Mike, thank you so much for the sermon this morning. I have learned a great deal from this months series. I wanted to email the website to my niece in Chuuk so she and the other relatives can read about the sermon and learn also, but I cannot find the series. May be I am not looking the right place. Let me know how I can find the series or if you have them on tape or audio, I would be happy to purchase for my niece.
Thank you pastor, keep up the good work. God bless you.

The past three weeks at work have been challenging. I feel I will soon be taking a risk and stepping out to make a stand for what I feel is right. I realize this could mean ruffling feathers “above me” and I don’t mean Jesus! I read in this blog that risk really means faithfullness. I want to be faithfull, I say I am faithfull so it’s time to step up and be faithful. I will ask for prayer to do what needs doing and mostly to be faithful no matter what the outcome. Thanks for listening

Julie – this was such a good story…i could relate to your feelings of guilt after not trusting that god would provide for you. Through my whole battle for Stormie, i’d get so upset at myself for doubting a god that has never disappointed me. I felt forsaken…and i had no reason to, but alas i am only human and so were you. Even Jesus felt forsaken while on the cross. That’s why we need a savior…he knew that for a time just as this in your life, that you (myself included), would need grace and favor in a world such as we are in!!!! Good Job Julie!
